Autotomy(n) The spontaneous casting off of a limb or other body part, such as the tail of certain lizards or the claw of a lobster, especially when the organism is injured or under attack.

Chorotype(n.) Type of geographical distribution of an organism, recurrent in more than one species; e.g., Boreoalpine, Mediterranean, Atlantic chorotype.
Cryptic(adj.) Fitted for concealing; serving to camouflage or hide.

Dorsal(adj.) of, pertaining to, or situated at the back, or dorsum.
Dorsolateral(adj.) of, relating to, or involving both the back and the sides.

Fossorial(adj.) Adapted for digging.
Fecundity(n.) The capacity for producing offspring, especially in abundance.

Gravid(adj.) Pregnant, carrying developing eggs or young.

H
Herpetofauna(n pl) A collective term covering both reptiles and amphibians.
Hibernacula(n pl) The places where reptiles and amphibians hibernate.
Hibernaculum(n) A place where reptiles or amphibians hibernate.

Lateral(adj.) of or pertaining to the side.

Ocelli(n pl) Markings that resemble an eye, an eyespot. On reptiles, usually a dark spot with a white centre.

Phenology(n) The scientific study of periodic biological phenomena, such as flowering, breeding, and migration, in relation to climatic conditions.

Refugia(n pl.) Material placed in likely habitat with the intention of providing a tempting shelter for reptiles (or amphibians) for the purpose of survey. Often, this material is a sheet of corrugated iron approximately two feet square, although other materials and dimensions can be used.

Subcaudal(adj.) Situated under, or on the ventral side of, the tail.

Ventral(adj.) of or pertaining to the venter or belly; abdominal.
